October 2004 Lee Wilson Demonstration

Australian Bonsai Master Lee Wilson came down to Melbourne to run some workshops and conducted a demonstration. It was the biggest meeting night ever in Bonsai Northwest history with over 100 people in attendance at a brand new venue. A special thanks to Ian and Glenys for all their running around and Peter and Lola for looking after Lee. Lee's demonstration was focused on root-over-rock bonsai using his most successful techniques.

Lee Wilson all smiles before his demonstration.

A huge crowd listening to Lee.

Lee had a table full of goodies. Rocks, pots, young trees, gravel, sand ....

This lovely rock and young fig were chosen to be joined.

A product called KneadIT was used to anchor the tie wire at the back of the tree.

The fig is placed on the rock and its roots are teased into the crevices of the rock.

Grafting tape is used to hold the roots into place.

Then Glad Wrap is wrapped around the tree to hold the moisture and spagnum moss.

Spagnum moss is shoved down into the plastic.

Final view. Heavy feeding from above and letting branches grow uncut will aid in the speedy development of the roots.

Lee then used three lava rocks and joined them together.

Using plastic bond adhesive to join the rocks.

Three piece of rock were joined to form this.

Lee uses chinese elm root cuttings to be placed on this rock.

Final result for this planting.

The queue for coffee/tea/biscuits was huge afterwards.
