by Barry Woods.
The President of Bonsai Northwest, Barry Woods, took to the demonstration stage and showed us how he creates his group plantings. Barry chose to work with Japanese Maples which belong to Ron Smith. Barry's incite and knowledge in creating groups is evident with the many group plantings he owns. About 70 people turned up on the night with a record number of trees on display.
Barry Woods before the demonstration. The Japanese Maples selected for use in the group had been prepared earlier. Barry explained that he creates groups by growing smaller groups of trees in grow pots for a few years and then combining them to form one larger group. Barry starts with the main trees. More trees are being added to the group as Barry explains how wants to form three triangles within the group. Rob helping Barry out with working in the soil. Some basic trimming of the branches. The finished (for now) group. Well done Barry. Another nicely styled group. And heres one Barry created earlier. This group contains 3 year old trees. Barry's corky bark elm group, about 8 years old. Group of Crazy filbert from the display table. A large myrtus. A nice pine owned by Peter, I believe. A small black pine in development. This tree has flowers emerging already. Another member tree from the display table. The crowd were glued to Barry's demonstration. The display table was full of member trees. Much interest among the members. Ha and Ron took care of our raffle table. Both Lola and Quentin love being photographed!!! Quentin has a look at a nice olive which needed its apex reduced. Pat leading the ladies in discussion.
