September 2001 - Barry Woods

Heralding the arrival of Spring to Melbourne...Barry Woods presented us with a great talk and demonstration on planting trees on a rock.

Barry used this large, but lightweight volcanic rock
He attached wires to the least interest parts of the rock
2
Stock for the demonstration were 2 yo. Sergeant's Junipers
Trees with soil removed
Seems our audiences are getter bigger each month
Barry smeared 'muck' on the rock at the site of each tree
He firmly pushed the roots of each tree into the muck
Then he passed the wires over the roots to hold the tree in position.
Each tiny tree was wired beforehand so that he could manipulate the trunks after planting
The roots on the muck.
More muck sealed the roots and a layer of moss was pressed into the fresh muck. This kink of planting needs to be kept constantly moist. Difficult in Australia's hot summers.
The entire free standing rock was placed in a Suiban.
A great demo....thanks Barry!
